Katherine’s One-Room Schoolhouse

“I wanted to share how I use/used my Modern Shed over the past few years since its creation at our home in Busch Gardens, Pasadena. The Modern Shed (known to most of my friends as “The She-Shed”), was originally added to our property to give me an extra 90 square feet of  “office” space. During the Covid lockdown, it quickly transformed into my one-room schoolhouse! I continue to use it as my tutoring space/office space. I feel so lucky to have had this space as my classroom and to provide curriculum accessibility to my 780 students throughout the virtual learning year of lockdown. Thank you Modern Shed!”

Katherine

A She-Shed / office was the perfect solution in Busch Gardens.
Katherine’s Modern Shed allowed her to continue teaching and tutoring during the pandemic lockdown.

Worth Every Penny

She shed #4PASADENA — Before purchasing their Modern-Shed, Katherine’s husband, Kent, would often grow frustrated by her little piles of paper littered throughout the guest bedroom.

“We have a three-bedroom house, and my husband has two girls who come and go and need the bedroom,” Katherine says. “I need some private space to do work because I’m a teacher, a place where if I need to keep piles out, I can close the doors, close the blinds and no one would know.”

Katherine’s 9′ by 10′ Modern-Shed fits nicely in the couple’s backyard, complementing their home and appearing as though it belonged there the whole time. Continue reading

Room to think

OLYMPIA — Two years ago, every single room of Olivia’s three-bedroom, ranch-style home in western Washington was occupied.

The mom of two worked from home and she needed a solution. Enter Modern-Shed.

“I have a house that is basically perfect in terms of the location,” Olivia says. “It’s near the school district, it’s near the city, but not in the city. But it’s really small. I needed an office because I was tired of working on the dining room table.”

The single mom worked from home as a psychologist and creative writer, and she dreamed of some day building a tiny house.

“I was looking for local and affordable options,” she recalls. “I had been toying with building a tiny house for a long time and even taken workshops from Jay Shafer and from Dee Williams with my dad. But it would take all year for me to build one. Since I didn’t have a handyman in the house who wanted to do that with me, I decided that prefab made a whole lot of sense.” Continue reading

Relax with a Modern-Shed sauna

It’s the end of summer, but you can still find time to unwind, especially if you’ve got a Modern-Shed primed for relaxation, like Natasha and Bill. Natasha’s art studio and sauna sheds were featured in July’s issue of Seattle magazine, but she gets to reap the benefits of a Modern-Shed relaxation space year-round.

We spoke to Natasha about her sheds two years ago, and it’s great to hear she’s still loving her shed and enjoying time in her sauna.

Writing in paradise

Judith’s Modern-Shed on Lopez Island is a perfect space for writing, meditating and doing yoga.

Lopez Island — Judith has had a house on Lopez Island in the beautiful San Juans of Washington state for the past 20 years, but she and her husband, Paul, have always known they’d like a little bit more space to enjoy their lovely surroundings.

“It’s a small house, and we have plans to expand, but I wanted a room away from our house so I could meditate, do yoga and write,” Judith recalls. “We couldn’t afford to do our expansion plan right then so a quickie way to get me some extra space was to get a Modern-Shed.”

Judith had been watching programs on tiny homes, so that’s where she’d gotten the idea to have a small space of her own. Continue reading

The Painter’s Dilemma: Meet Barbara

Before finding Modern-Shed, Barbara’s large-scale paintings had begun to take over her living space. Before finding Modern-Shed, Barbara’s large-scale paintings had begun to take over her living space.IMG_6718

“I’m a large-format painter, specifically I paint portraits, but for the last seven years I’d been painting in our dining room,” she said. “The last series I did were roughly 30-by-40 feet. Sometimes I do 36-by-72 feet work. I work in panels and by the end of the day I’d have stacks of paintings.” Continue reading

Why Should Men Have All the Fun?

SheShed image

Author Erika Kotite spent nearly a year studying the “she shed” phenomenon for her new book, “She Sheds: A Room of Your Own.”
While men have got their man caves, women also need a space of their own, as many of our clients have come to understand. “She Sheds” shows readers how to create cozy getaways with inspiration from across the country.
In addition to building her sister a she shed, Kotite also featured a couple Modern-Sheds in her work.
Buy her book on Amazon and check out other blog posts for more inspiration on ways women use their sheds!

SEATTLE — Growing up in Russia, Natasha has always considered using saunas to be an integral part of life.

Her husband, Bill, who worked in Russia for years, agreed, so when the couple started looking to expand their Seattle home, they knew they needed a special space.

“It’s our weekly ritual to relax,” Natasha said. “It’s cleansing and rejuvenating. We didn’t really have space in the house to have it and we saw Modern-Shed products online. They pop up and catch your eye.” Continue reading

Heaven on Earth

Belinda purchased a 10′ by 14′ Modern-Shed for her backyard.

North of San Diego — When it comes to decorating her home with her husband of 30 years, Belinda had gotten used to compromising.

“Every single time we’ve had to cover a couch or pick a paint color, he wants to go in one direction and I want to go in another,” Belinda sighs. “And it’s always a compromise.”

Compromise works great in a marriage, but sometimes you just want to have things your own way, in your own style.

Enter Modern-Shed. Continue reading
