A 14′ by 14′ Modern-Shed garden studio in progress.
Navigating the messy world of building codes and permits can be an overwhelming and daunting experience for many of our Modern-Shed clients.
Thankfully, Modern-Shed works closely with our clients to determine when and if a building permit is needed in their jurisdiction and for their structure, and if so, what is needed to make the process as smooth, speedy and efficient as possible. Continue reading →
Los Altos — Byron and Elizabeth had been thinking about building a separate, detached structure from their home for years.
Elizabeth, an artist, draws and works with acrylics, watercolor and more, but every time the couple had a visitor, she had to move her work out of the guest room she’d been using as a studio.Continue reading →
Northern California — Like most people who find Modern-Shed, Darren started off looking for something more.
This 12-by-18 Modern-Shed serves as a home gym and training facility.
“I wanted to have a state-of-the-art gym at home, and created one in my garage,” he says. “After a while, this got old as it sacrificed space for all my vehicles. I wanted something more.”
In the world of “prefab,” there are some misnomers.
Building codes/laws regulate the difference between certain construction types and are regulated by different government agencies.
Most pre-fab structures are built in a factory. The factory can be certified or “pre-inspected” by a governing agency; such is the case for mobile or manufactured homes, where the governing agency is the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Smaller operations such as Modern-Shed, which are not certified by any government agency, must produce structures that can be inspected at the building site and must conform to International Building Code (IBC) standards. Continue reading →
Modern-Shed is excited to announce a new partnership with Peninsula Credit Union, a Western Washington-based financial institution that works closely with its members to meet their needs.
For the first time in Modern-Shed’s history, financial loans will be made available through Peninsula Credit Union to finance the purchase of a Modern-Shed.
Modern-Shed General Manager Tim Vack and owner Ryan Smith discuss the possibilities for a Modern-Shed at a Peninsula Credit Union event.
“Not everyone has the kind of money sitting around to buy a Modern-Shed,” said Modern-Shed General Manager Tim Vack. “What we’re really about is the customer, how do you want to use this space? This is an exciting opportunity to make those dreams come true.”
Jim Morrell, president and CEO of Peninsula Credit Union, said the new partnership developed organically, through conversations in the Mason County community, where Peninsula Credit Union is based.
“Peninsula Credit Union is all about customizing the financial experience for our members and meeting the needs of our members with flexibility,” Morrell said. “That, to me, is what Modern-Shed is about as well. It’s about maybe not commuting the one and a half hours to an office because you can have that office in your backyard.”
For more information on Peninsula Credit Union, visit www.pcfcu.org or speak with Modern-Shed dealer Jeff Bergerson at 360-789-7822.
This Modern Shed guest room is a space solution for Debbie and Burt.
Vashon Island — Burt and Debbie have lived in the greater Seattle area for more than 30 years, but they dream of escaping rush hour and congestion to live full-time at their Vashon Island home.
Their dreams became more of a reality two years ago, when their long-time renters decided to move on.
The couple elected to spend more time at their Vashon Island home, however, there was one problem — they didn’t have quite the space they wanted for visitors, including their two adult children.
“We love our home, but it’s only two bedrooms and we have two kids,” Burt said. “We’ve been watching Modern-Shed for years. We thought it really could integrate well with our house, which, even though it was built in the 1980s, is very modern-looking.”
SAN RAFAEL — From the start, Rebecca and Jeremiah based every design decision regarding their Modern-Shed as if they would one day live there. Continue reading →
How do you run a business that technically does not have a location or even regular employees?
That’s the question producers of MSNBC wanted to answer when they interviewed the crew behind Modern-Shed last week — owner Ryan Grey Smith, general manager Tim Vack, lead manufacturer Erik Johnston and dealer Mike Probach were each interviewed in their homes and workplaces in the greater Seattle area, where Modern-Shed is headquartered.
Modern-Shed general manager Tim Vack, at left, is being interviewed by msnbc producer Frank Silverstein.
The program, “Your Business,” airs Sundays at 7:30 a.m. Eastern Time on MSNBC and features a short profile on a business, along with pragmatic tips for business owners and entrepreneurs on how to start or run their own enterprises smarter. Continue reading →
Modern-Shed customers often use their new shed as a retreat from the home, sometimes creating work spaces, such as art studios, home offices or writing rooms.
Less often do we hear of customers carving out a different kind of space — a Modern-Shed home fitness center, but the options are endless. We’ve had customers create Modern-Shed yoga studios, Modern-Shed gyms and even a Modern-Shed sauna and steam room! Continue reading →
